Workshops  Further information

Bespoke workshops

Our workshops are designed for groups of up to three friends, family or colleagues. Because we are restricted for space, they work best if we work on one collective project using the Albion hand press. If you have a specific project in mind, please let us know in advance so that we can assess whether it is achievable in the time available. Alternatively, we can come up with ideas on the day.

Do I need experience?

No. The workshops are designed for those who have little or no experience.

How much does a workshop cost?

Full day workshops cost £250 for a group of up to three people. If you are considering buying this as a gift, we can provide you with a printed voucher so that the recipient can book their workshop direct with us.

Bath Spa University students and staff

If you are a BSU student or member of staff, you may be eligible to join a free workshop. For further details, please contact Professor Ian Gadd (igadd@bathspa.ac.uk) or your course tutor.

Children

Unfortunately we are unable to offer workshops to anyone under the age of 16.

The Mansion House

We are located in the Old Groundsman’s Store at the back of  the restored 18th-century Mansion House, now owned   and run by Wiltshire Council. We have access to the communal areas and facilities of the main building via a key card, but students are requested to keep noise levels down and not stray into the rest of the building as it is used as private office space. No smoking or vaping is permitted on the site.

Parking

The car park at the Mansion House is private and you will require a permit – which we can arrange (£7.50/day) with the administrator – if you wish to park there during office hours (Mon–Fri, 8–6.00). Outside those hours, the space is unregulated. Generally it’s best to park in the long-stay Post Office Lane car park (MiPermit: Location ID 700114) which is a 5-minute walk away. See also Parkopedia.

Food and drink

We will provide complimentary coffee, tea and biscuits. For lunch, we advise you to take at least a half-hour break. Whether you bring a packed lunch or buy refreshments in town, you can enjoy these inside the Mansion House or, weather permitting, at the tables and benches in the garden.

Trains

Corsham’s nearest station is Chippenham, on the GWR mainline service between London Paddington and Bristol Temple Meads, which also stops at Bath, Swindon and Reading.

Buses

Corsham is served by the X31 (32 mins, Mon–Fri) and 231 (45mins) buses running between Bath and Chippenham. The 231 from Bath stops outside the Mansion House on Pickwick Road; the X31 stops on Newlands Road, a 5-minute walk from the Mansion House. See Faresaver timetables here.

Access

Access to the studio is paved and level, with no steps, but the working space is quite confined and full of potentially hazardous equipment, and those attending full-day workshops should expect to be on their feet for much of the time. Toilets are adjacent to the studio. If you have any mobility or health issues, please get in touch so that we can advise accordingly.

What to wear

The studio has a stone floor, the presses are oily and you will be working with metal type and printing ink, so please wear sensible footwear (avoid open sandals) and clothes you don’t mind getting dirty (though aprons are provided). Also, because presses have moving parts, please tie up long hair and avoid items that might catch such as scarves, ties, necklaces, bracelets, bangles and chunky rings.
